Red Sox Seen As ‘Dark Horse’ To Land Superstar Free Agent In Surprise Move

The Boston Red Sox have a chance to land arguably the biggest star in baseball this offseason.

Boston has plenty of money to spend and a real need to improve the roster. The Red Sox made positive strides in 2023 but still finished with 78 wins. Boston now has new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow leading the organization and this will be an extremely important offseason.

The Red Sox have been linked to multiple superstars but the most interesting one without a doubt is Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. While the Los Angeles Dodgers are seen as the favorites for Ohtani, Boston is viewed as a dark horse candidate, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

“It feels like we’ve been so focused on the Dodgers and (San Francisco Giants) due to the belief that Ohtani wants to stay on the West Coast, but what if he’s open to heading east,” Feinsand asked. “The Red Sox have fallen out of the limelight in Boston, so what better way to get back into the headlines than to sign the best player in baseball?

“Ohtani is said to love hitting at Fenway Park, and in his two career starts there, he’s allowed one run while striking out 14 over nine innings. Just as Chaim Bloom’s tenure was defined by his early trade of Mookie Betts, perhaps Craig Breslow’s run as chief baseball officer will be launched by the signing of the two-time American League Most Valuable Player.”

Ohtani is going to be the most sought-after free agent this offseason and possibly in league history. There has never been a player like him before and may not be another one. Boston needs to add a boost in the middle of the lineup and an ace pitcher. Ohtani won’t be able to pitch in 2024 but immediately would improve the lineup. Plus, he would give the Red Sox the ace they need in 2025. A move makes sense.
