Deion Sanders Says He Won’t Sign Lifetime Contract: ‘That Can Flip on You Instantaneously’

Colorado coach Deion Sanders may have spent time in September as the hottest story in North American sports; however, this does not exempt him from the forces that make the college football world go around.

Sanders himself understands as much. On Tuesday, the Buffaloes’ coach rebuked the thought of potentially signing a lifetime contract with Colorado.

“That’s a wonderful gesture. I love it. But I’m smart enough to know and old and wise enough to know that that can flip on you instantaneously,” Sanders said. “The fan only blows when you hot. My mama said that. Not me. So if y’all want to get mad, get mad at my mama.”

Despite the success he’s found in Boulder, Deion Sanders says he won’t sign a “lifetime contract” to coach Colorado football.

Sanders’s contract, as reported by Brian Howell of BuffZone and the Boulder Daily Camera in Dec. 2022, is currently worth $29.5 million over five years.

The Buffaloes are currently 3–2, having sustained back-to-back losses to top-10 Oregon and USC teams. Despite recent setbacks, Colorado has already tripled its win total from last year, and Sanders has succeeded in raising the Buffaloes’ profile by bringing celebritiespregame shows and eyeballs to Boulder.
