Chelsea Women have taken a massive step towards reaching the 2026/27 UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase after producing a sensational second-half comeback to defeat Real Sociedad 5–2 in the first leg of their third qualifying-round tie.
The result was far from straightforward, however. Real Sociedad shocked the hosts early, Chelsea were twice forced to recover from setbacks, and the Spanish side looked capable of causing a major upset before the Blues eventually turned the match into a statement victory.
The seven-goal thriller was played at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Wednesday, August 26, with Chelsea beginning their European campaign in front of their supporters. UEFA confirmed that the third qualifying round determines the final nine places in the Champions League league phase.
⚡ Real Sociedad deliver an early shock
Chelsea entered the match as favourites, but Real Sociedad immediately showed that they had no intention of simply sitting back.
The visitors stunned Chelsea after just seven minutes when Ainhoa Marín produced a spectacular looping effort that found the back of the net. It was a dream moment for the Spanish side and an early warning that Chelsea would have to work extremely hard for their advantage.

Malard scored her second goal of the evening to complete a remarkable debut and give Chelsea a 5–2 victory. Ellie Carpenter again played a crucial role, providing the assist as Chelsea finished the match in dominant fashion.
Five different Chelsea goals? Not quite — but the Blues found five goals through four different scorers, with Malard emerging as the headline star.
Her brace immediately made her debut one to remember.
🏆 One foot in the league phase
Chelsea’s three-goal advantage puts them in an excellent position heading into the second leg in Spain.
The return fixture is scheduled for September 2 at Estadio Zubieta in San Sebastián, where Real Sociedad will need to overturn a three-goal deficit to eliminate the English side.
Chelsea have also maintained their impressive record of reaching the Champions League group stage or league phase in every season since the current format was introduced, and this result has moved them significantly closer to continuing that run.
However, the Blues cannot afford to become complacent. Real Sociedad demonstrated in London that they possess enough attacking quality to punish defensive mistakes, and Chelsea will know that the job is not officially finished.
Still, after falling behind early and twice being pegged back, Chelsea showed character, quality and attacking power to produce a memorable 5–2 victory.
For Malard, it was a dream debut. For Chelsea, it was a major European statement.
The Blues now head to Spain with a three-goal cushion and Champions League qualification firmly within their grasp.
