Rival GM Reveals Major Problem Browns Face on Deshaun Watson

The Cleveland Browns brought Deshaun Watson in a massive trade two years ago, moving on from former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield and sending significant draft capital to the Houston Texans to land him.

But the blockbuster move has failed to yield results, and one rival general manager is now offering a sobering assessment of the problem the Browns face. Speaking to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports, the unnamed general manager said it was a big gamble for the Browns to land Watson and has backfired on Cleveland’s front office.

As Vacchiano noted, Watson is in Year 3 of his fully guaranteed, five-year, $230 million contract — giving the Browns little recourse to move on.

“They obviously knew they’d be stuck with him when they got him, but they assumed he’d be the player he was in Houston,” the rival general manager said. “He was becoming a great player in Houston. Really dynamic in a lot of ways.

“He looks nothing like that player now.”

Aside from the off-the-field issues that led to an 11-game suspension in 2022, Watson has failed to reach his former peak with the Texans, Vacchiano noted. Through 16 total starts with the Browns, Watson has thrown for 2,944 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
