World No. 2 Jannik Sinner announced on Saturday that he will not play at the upcoming Italian Open due to a hip injury.

The 22-year-old published a statement in Italian on X, formerly Twitter, about his injury, saying that he is working with doctors to be ready for the French Open.

A translation of his statement reads: “It is not easy to write this message but after speaking again with the doctors and specialists about my hip problems I have to announce that unfortunately I will not be able to play in Rome. Obviously I’m very sad that I didn’t recover, it being one of my favourite tournaments ever. I couldn’t wait to come back and play at home in front of the Italian crowd ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น .

“I will still come to Rome for a few days and stop by the Foro Italico. Thank you for your messages of support, which I appreciate very much! Now I will work with my team and doctors to be ready for Roland Garros.”

Notably, Sinner dominated the first quarter of the season, winning his first major at the Australian Open before lifting trophies in Rotterdam and Miami. He owns a 1,650-point lead in the ATP Live Race To Turin over second-placed Daniil Medvedev

After losing a tough semi-final in Monte-Carlo, Sinner looked to bounce back in Madrid, but withdrew before his quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime due to the same hip injury.

Australian Open champion Sinner joins world number three Carlos Alcaraz in withdrawing from the Italian Open after the Spaniard succumbed to a right forearm injury that sidelined him in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

ย

Sinner’s withdrawal from the Italian Open will also impact his battle with Novak Djokovic for World No. 1.

The 36-year-old Djokovic currently leads Sinner by 1,130 points in the ATP Live Rankings. But despite defending 90 more points than Sinner in Rome (180 to 90), the Serbian will have an opportunity to extend his advantage because the Italian will not be competing at the Foro Italico.
