Jameis Winston is a talented player and a great teammate, occasionally showing glimpses of why he was once a No. 1 overall pick. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that he is not the long-term solution at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
In the Browns’ 27-14 loss to the Steelers, Winston’s inconsistency was on full display. While he threw two touchdown passes, he also tossed two costly interceptions. This duality has defined his career, exemplified by his infamous 2019 season with Tampa Bay, where he threw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, leading the league with 5,109 passing yards.
Now nearly a decade into his NFL journey, Winston has proven to be a capable backup but not a reliable starting quarterback. At 3-10, the Browns are in a prime position to target a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, and they must prioritize this need above all else.
While Cleveland also has deficiencies at offensive tackle, receiver, and on defense, its greatest concern is finding a franchise quarterback. Relying on a 30-year-old journeyman, who turns 31 in January, is not a viable path forward.
That said, Winston could still have value as a mentor to a rookie quarterback, and he appears to enjoy playing in Cleveland. However, the Browns must not entertain the idea of making him their long-term starter. It’s evident he’s not the answer for the team’s future.
