Carlos Santana has canceled some of his upcoming tour dates to undergo a โ€œcorrective procedureโ€ for his back.

ย

The news coincides with a contentious performance by the Grammy-winning guitarist at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on Tuesday, Aug. 27, during which the 77-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician who was an integral part of the San Francisco music scene criticized the hometown crowd for its lack of energy.ย

ย

โ€œWe go around the world. And around the world, theyโ€™re freaking out, they know how to party. They know how to get crazy,โ€ Santana told the crowd of 17,000. โ€œRight here at home, it feels like weโ€™re at the home. The old peopleโ€™s house

ย

He urged, โ€œWe ainโ€™t having it. You got some energy and we want it. Go Santana banana fโ€”ing crazy, man

ย

Santana, known for classics like โ€œBlack Magic Woman,โ€ โ€œEvil Waysโ€ and โ€œSmooth,โ€ delivered a nearly two-hour performance front-loaded with his greatest hits and heavy with solos after co-headliners Counting Crows performed their full set, according to a San Jose Mercury News concert review.

ย

He performed seated for much of the show, likely due to his persistent back issues.

ย

Santana also shared his thoughts on the current political climate during the show

ย

Weโ€™re living in times where we have to come together,โ€ He told the crowd. โ€œSome people say there is a right wing or a left wing. Itโ€™s still the same bird.โ€ Santana added, โ€œWe have the capacity to dismantle what is happening with Korea, Russia and China. Somehow, these people want nuclear war. And weโ€™re, like, โ€˜No, no, no, no.โ€™ Weโ€™re too evolved for that sโ€“โ€“.โ€

ย

As a result of his upcoming medical procedure, Santana has canceled shows in Phoenix and Albuquerque as well as a portion of his residency at the House of Blues Las Vegas. Ticketmaster will automatically refund tickets for these dates.

ย

Despite these cancellations, Santana still planned to perform in San Diego on Friday, Aug. 30, and at the Fool in Love festival near Los Angeles on Saturday, Aug. 31.ย

ย

โ€œCarlos looks forward to seeing everyone post-procedure,โ€ said a statement from his representatives posted Tuesday on social media, noting his return to the stage is expected to be at the House of Blues Las Vegas on Oct. 30.ย
