NFL Considered Placing Bills LB Von Miller on Exempt List After Arrest

Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Von Miller turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued for alleged domestic violence last season. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about it at the Owners Meeting.

Amid a tough season on the field for Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Von Miller, those were the least of his problems during the 2023 season.

Miller, 35, was accused of domestic violence by his longtime girlfriend and was charged by Dallas police and he turned himself in on Nov. 30. The alleged assault of a pregnant woman is a third-degree felony and is punishable by a $10,000 fine and 2 to 10 years in prison. Miller posted a $5,000 bond and was released and played the rest of the season minus being a healthy scratch against the New England Patriots on Dec. 31.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about Miller’s situation at the NFL Owners Meeting in Orlando, and he said that while the league considered taking action, they didn’t feel it was necessary given the information they had.

“We did consider that,” Goodell said. “We felt it was not appropriate at the time based on all the facts. I have not gotten an update recently on the status of his case.”

Miller spoke about the alleged incident during the season, saying the situation was “blown out of proportion.” He also said that he hated being connected to this kind of situation.

“Whatever happened, I hate that it happened,” Miller said. “I hate my name is attached to anything like that, and it’s just a matter of time until I can clear it up,” he added. “Me and my girlfriend, we have problems just like any other couple does, but there has never been any of those things that was alleged against me.”

With it still being an ongoing investigation, there’s a chance he could still face discipline from the NFL if anything comes from the alleged incident.

Miller took a pay cut this offseason to help the Bills get under the cap. He missed the first four games of the season as he recovered from a torn ACL that he suffered on Thanksgiving in 2022. He had two tackles and three quarterback hits in 12 games during the regular season and had two tackles against the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs.
