Previous Cowboys’ WR Richards passes on

MURRAY, Utah — Brilliant Richards, the previous Dallas Ranchers collector known for his streaming fair hair who broadly caught a landing pass off a contraption play within the 1978 Super Bowl, kicked the bucket Friday of congestive heart disappointment at his domestic in Murray. He was 73.

Richards’ nephew, Spear Richards, affirmed the passing in a Facebook post.

“My uncle Brilliant passed absent calmly this morning,” Spear Richards composed. “I will until the end of time keep in mind going chasing and talking Dallas Cowpoke football. He was a kind and sweet soul and I’m so cheerful he’s not enduring any longer.”

The previous BYU star spent seven seasons within the NFL with Dallas, Chicago and Denver, and is best known for his five-plus seasons as a deep-play risk with the Cattle rustlers. He twice found the middle value of more than 21 yards per capture, wrapping up his time in Dallas with an 18.3 career stamp.

That was particularly apparent within the 1978 Super Bowl against Denver. With the Cowboys ahead 20-10 within the fourth quarter, fullback Robert Newhouse tossed a 29-yard landing pass to Richards, who got behind the defense to all but guarantee the Ranchers of their moment championship.

Richards wrapped up his career with 122 gatherings for 2,136 yards and 17 TDs some time recently wounds prompted him to resign in 1980.

A Salt Lake City local, he featured at Stone Tall School, at that point at adjacent BYU, where he was a collector and punt returner, driving the country as a junior with four returns for TDs.

Richards played his last college season at Hawaii, catching 23 passes for 414 yards and five touchdowns. That caught the eye of the Ranchers, who drafted him within the moment circular in 1973.

Richards was analyzed with Parkinson’s illness in 2011 and lived with grown-up children Goldie Jr. and Jordan in his afterward a long time. Doug Richards said his brother broke his hip on Christmas in 2022 and had four hip surgeries.

“He has cleared out us and gone to distant better;a much better;a higher;a stronger;an improved”>a stronger put,” Doug Richards said. “He battled beautiful great there to the conclusion, until it was his time.”
