Red Sox Reportedly Among Best Fits For Superstar Outfielder In Surprise Move

Boston reportedly could make a surprise move and land a former Most Valuable Player

There’s going to be plenty of star power on the move this offseason.

The 2023 World Series is behind us and Major League Baseball free agency officially has begun. This is a crucial offseason for the Boston Red Sox who have finished in last place in each of the last two seasons with 78 wins. Boston recently hired Craig Breslow to replace Chaim Bloom as the club’s chief baseball officer and it’s clear the club is going to be busy looking to improve the club.

The Athletic’s Tim Britton and Aaron Gleeman compiled a list of baseball’s best free agents and the top landing spots for each of them. While the Red Sox are expected to be extremely active in the starting pitching market, they could use another power bat in the middle of the lineup and reportedly are considered among the top spots for Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, according to Britton and Gleeman.

“The only words that glide off a (general manager’s) mouth smoother than ‘risk/reward’ are ‘sustainability’ and ‘opportunistic,'” Britton and Gleeman said. “So here is Bellinger, as risky a big-time reward as free agency has presented in some time. After a pair of bewilderingly poor seasons, Bellinger returned to being one of the game’s premier players in 2023 on a pillow contract with the Cubs.

“He was the linchpin to an improved Chicago offense, propelling it into contention during one otherworldy stretch this summer and overall posting his best numbers since his (Most Valuable Player) campaign in 2019 while patrolling center field most of the time. Bellinger is still only entering his age-28 season, and his ceiling is as a superstar capable of pairing top-flight offense with standout defense at a premium position. There’s no other position player available in this market that can claim that.”

Boston was listed along with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and San Francisco Giants as the top spots for Bellinger to land. The Red Sox seemingly have a surplus of outfield talent but that could change quickly. Boston may end up trading outfielder Alex Verdugo this offseason which could open the door to a free agent signing. Bellinger would be an intriguing player to bring into the mix.

He has been linked more closely to the Yankees and Mets but certainly could help the Red Sox if the club opted to spend big on offense.
