The Colts veteran has been named as a potential trade target

ESPN has identified fourth-year safety Julian Blackmon as a potential trade target for another NFL team before the deadline.

The Indianapolis Colts are in an interesting situation with one week remaining before the NFL trade deadline.
With a record below .500 and starting quarterback Anthony Richardson out for the remainder of the season, the Colts cannot be considered a true contender. However, the team shouldn’t be a complete sell as they are just one game out of last place in the AFC.
ESPN’s Stephen Holder walked a tightrope for Colts general manager Chris Ballard when he identified safety Julian Blackmon as a potential trade chip for a Tuesday article.

“If the Colts want to get a serious bid for safety, they will need to consider 2022 third-round pick Nick Cross,” Holder wrote.
“Teams are trying to put Kroos on the pitch as a third safety because they like his strengths.
After a slow start last season, he started to catch the attention of the coaches.
“Blackmon is now entering the final year of his rookie contract.”

Cross started the first two games of his career to start the 2022 season.
But since Week 2 last year, he has played just six defensive snaps.
Cross has played 10 snaps on defense this year.

This isn’t really an indication that the Colts are trying to get more playing time for Cross. However, if what Holder is reporting is true, trading Blackmon would give Kross more defensive play.

But Indianapolis has a very young high school. Losing Blackmon, who played in 38 career games, wouldn’t be ideal for the Colts in 2023. Blackmon set career highs with 50 combined tackles, four tackles for loss and two interceptions this season.
He also has three pass defense capabilities.

However, Blackmon becomes a free agent at the end of the season.
If the Colts lose in Week 8 and fall further out of the playoffs, it would make sense for Indianapolis to initiate a trade if they receive an offer that includes a nice package of draft picks for Blackmon.
