Spurs extend Devin Vassell’s contract, giving Gunner Wembanyama another 5 years

San Antonio Spurs have secured the long-term future of running mate Victor Wembanyama.

The Spurs reached an agreement Monday with shooting guard Devin Vassell on a five-year contract extension. The 23-year-old’s new contract was announced during the team’s media day, giving fans a double dose of excitement as the new NBA season approaches.

Vassell became a star

The finances behind this deal may surprise many, but Vassell’s development during the 2022/23 season has convinced San Antonio that he is a player worth developing.

The Spurs selected Vassell with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and the former Florida State guard has seen his scoring average skyrocket from 5.5 points per game as a rookie to over 18 points per game last season. He shot 39% from 3-point range, while also contributing 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

Unfortunately, a knee injury cost Vassell most of the 2022/23 season, when he only played 38 matches. Back at full health, Vassell is on pace to post All-Star caliber numbers in his fourth NBA season.

Place the core in the correct position

For nearly 15 years, Spurs fans have been fortunate to watch the “Big Three” of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker dominate the NBA. From 2003 to 2014, the Spurs won four championships and left countless memories in the collective basketball consciousness. But San Antonio fell on hard times after the trio retired, leading the franchise to select Wembanyama first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama and Vassell could make a dangerous pair — and the Spurs, have enough space in 2024, possibly adding a top free agent to form a new “Big Three.”

The Spurs’ 2023/24 season kicks off on October 25 in San Antonio against Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks.
