The Vikings’ Justin Jefferson is about to do something no other receiver has ever done

These days, it’s easy to become numb to the greatness of Justin Jefferson. He’s like the basketball legend who shows up at the gym, knocks out everyone else for $50, then packs his bags and goes home for the evening. You just expect it.

However, it should be noted that Jefferson was not guarded by sweaty old men. Instead, he gets plenty of upside against NFL cornerbacks, who often get help at safeties. The numbers seem unreal in four games:
33 catches for 543 yards and 3 touchdowns. Extrapolate those numbers over a 17-game season and he’s on pace for 140 catches, 2,300 yards and 13 touchdowns.

All of those totals would overshadow a 2022 season that seems impossible to top.

So how did this happen? How did Justin Jefferson go one step further? The trail to the answer lies in the perspective shared by a 79-year-old wide receivers coach named Jerry Sullivan.

“He was very different from a lot of the other guys,” Sullivan said recently. “He is not someone who is so satisfied with what he has achieved that he cannot see the light. When you start thinking it’s because of you, that’s when you’re in trouble.

You may remember Sullivan from last year’s Jefferson story. It turns out that Sullivan, who coached Larry Fitzgerald, Isaac Bruce, Anquan Boldin, Brandon Lloyd and many other smooth route runners in the NFL, was invited to consult by then-LSU coach Ed Orgeron during the 2017 season.
