Deion Sanders on thoughts of lifetime Colorado contract: ‘That can flip on you instantaneously’
Deion Sanders turned Boulder into the epicenter of the sports world in September, which has meant unprecedented financial windfall for Colorado as the Buffaloes exceeded expectations with a 3-2 start.
But with that has come constant conversation about Sanders’ next stop. The NFL? A bigger college job? What would Sanders think about a lifetime contract at Colorado, or something to lock him down in Boulder?
“That’s a wonderful gesture. I love it. But I’m smart enough to know and old and wise enough to know that that can flip on you instantaneously,” Sanders said at his weekly news conference Tuesday. “The fan only blows when you hot. My mama said that. Not me. So if y’all want to get mad, get mad at my mama.”
The Buffaloes, who started 3-0 and lost their last two games to top 10 opponents Oregon and USC, travel to 1-4 Arizona State on Saturday. The Sun Devils have yet to beat an FBS opponent this year under first-year coach Kenny Dillingham, who Sanders said he had conversations with about coaching together previously, but declined to elaborate on when or where.

Sanders, who earns $5.5 million per season and ranks 32nd nationally according to data compiled by USA Today, said he appreciated the support that would make a lifetime contract or a more restrictive extension attractive to Colorado fans, but said he blocks out both criticism and support.
“If I listen to that, I’m gonna have to listen to this,” he said. “You can’t choose that and not this.”
Two-way star Travis Hunter remains sidelined with a lacerated liver suffered on Sept. 16 against Colorado State and Sanders said he hoped to keep Hunter sidelined through Colorado’s bye week and aimed for a return against UCLA on Oct. 28. He noted that Hunter will be pressing him to return sooner, but hoped he could keep him out long enough to fully heal.
